New series of training workshops helps DBE businesses win work
Sustainable Business Training Program expected to continue next year

In partnership with the Rocky Mountain Minority Contractors Association (RMMCA), earlier this year COMTO Colorado created a new series of educational workshops called the Sustainable Business Training Program. This program was offered as a free resource to COMTO Colorado and RMMCA's DBE members to aid in developing skills needed to successfully bid projects.

The four-month, eight-session program was designed to educate members of the SBE and DBE contracting community on effective proposal development and marketing, project estimating, human capital resource management and state/federal workforce compliance.

Participants also competed in an RFP contest where they were asked to develop a mock proposal which was then judged by prime contractors and given tips for improvement. In the end, two DBE firms tied, winning free consultation services in estimating, human resources and proposal writing – a prize valued at more than $8,000!

Because of the success of the program, COMTO Colorado plans to continue it next year and cover areas including certified payroll, QuickBooks and hands-on estimating. We welcome any suggestions you may have for topic areas you'd like to see covered in next year's program.

What people are saying about the program...

“We were able to land our very next bid due to the organization layout from Rex Davis’ lecture. I look forward to more opportunities to capitalize on this knowledge.” – Andrew Owens, Precision Fiber Optics

I cannot think of a single small business that would not benefit from this program. The information that was exchanged was extremely valuable. The presenters provided current labor law information that protects the business owner. The exchange of dialog with other small businesses and the presenters provided insight into the challenge of preparing estimates and takes offs for the proposal process. I can’t wait to attend the next session. Thanks SO MUCH COMTO for moving my business forward.” Colleen McGann, Steel Images, Inc.

“I whole heartedly support COMTO/ RMMCA training efforts on behalf of its members. In an increasingly competitive market, a company's estimating and proposal writing skills are vital to securing good work at the right price.” – John West, RTD FasTracks West Corridor Project Manager

COMTO Colorado would like to thank our sponsors who made the Sustainable Business Training Program a success – Balfour Beatty, Colorado Contractors Association, Denver Transit Construction Group, Denver Transit Partners and Mountain Air Transit Partners.

Spring DBE Reverse Trade Fair a success!

Last month’s DBE Reverse Trade Fair was a huge success. Twenty-three DBE firms had the opportunity to network and showcase their skills to 10 different prime contractors. One participant reported four potential contracts as a result of the event!

Because of the success of the event, the Michigan Department of Transportation has asked COMTO Colorado to assist them in establishing a similar DBE Reverse Trade Fair.

COMTO is also pleased to announce that by the conclusion of the event, we had seven new members!
